Flies And Fins North
Use fliesandfinsnorth.com to post any fly fishing tips or tricks that you have learned while fly fishing the North. If you have a question, ask it. A question answered and archived will serve as a tip for someone else down the road. We understand that fly fishing is an ever learning sport so if you have a tip pass it along to another fly fisherman. We believe that everybody is constantly learning, and it is not possible to "know it all". Enjoy.
Featured Picture: A nice shot of an Atlantic Salmon hook up in Nova Scotia. When everything comes together and the water levels are perfect and the fish are on the move; Atlantic Salmon fly fishing is in a class of its own. It's certainly not an all the time event and that is why the Atlantic Salmon is "the fish of a thousand casts", but when an Atlantic Salmon does take your fly; You are hooked for life. |

Canada: Fly Fishing Atlantic Salmon
Posted by greg on Saturday, November 10 @ 17:18:40 PST
First see my article on flies and fins home page. My tip is simple, when fish are not plentiful, fish wisely. This for my group of five meant starting bottom of the river up and top of the river down. Look for pools that look like holding areas, signs of fish and covering all the water including runs, pools and pocket water. We stayed on the Margaree but fished and caught fish on other rivers, some were branches of other rivers. The way to catch fish when the nay sayers say that there are none is cover all the water and move to other rivers if they are holding fish.

Maine Atlantic Salmon: Opening Day
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Thursday, September 13 @ 06:56:35 PDT
Yes, Maine is again allowing fishing for the King of fish. I purchased a permit to fish the Penobscott river for Salmon and the price is $ 16.00. As last year there will be a fisherman's breakfast at one or 2 of the Atlantic Salmon clubs along the shore. These breakfasts are a good way to pick up some tips on fishing the river and hear some great stories about recent and past trips.Support for this activity is important for future fisherman in Maine.

Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN): Coming to a Stream Near You?
Posted by AvidDavid on Monday, August 20 @ 07:10:55 PDT
(The following is excerpted from a post on Flies and Fins and is posted here after a request from Greg.) In June, my son and I made our first trip of this year to the Connetquot River State Park on Long Island (NY). We were surprised to find that several of the rules for fishing had been changed due to the discovery of fish infected with Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN) a disease that is dangerous for salmonids (Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Atlantic Salmon – see www.dec.ny.gov/environmentaldec/18330.html).

Canada: Are The Salmon Running?
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Saturday, July 14 @ 04:23:32 PDT
This question is to those fishing for Atlantic Salmon in Newfoundland, Labrador and Atlantic Canada. When I left Canada the strawberry run was late in the above mentioned parts of Canada and the theory was that the water along the coast was to cold yet for the fish to run. We would like to hear if the run started yet, their numbers and some and some stories and info on this late run. Stories and pictures would be

Canada: Atlantic Salmon & Sea Run Brook Trout
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Friday, July 13 @ 07:13:08 PDT
When a run of Atlantic Salmon doesn't show up and the river you are on has not much else to offer, be prepared to change your target species. This preperation will include bringing a lighter rod and reel suitable for trout fishing. Also leader and of course flies. Also look for other local rivers and streams in the area as well as different water sheds. Searun Rainbows. Brown Trout and Brook Trout can be a lot more

Quebec: Brook Trout Tactics
Posted by MANITOU on Saturday, May 12 @ 07:27:29 PDT
The basic technique to locate fish is quite simple, the salters like shallow slow moving current. Depending on the time of year and tides these could be right next to shore in the estuary and out in the ocean in between sandbars in hot pursuit of lances or capelin a favorite abundant baitfish in this region. Always consider the low and high tide which can vary a lot in one day. These tidal cycle do not only determine where the fish are but also where the bait fish will be. The best time are 2 hour prior to low tide and 2 hours after. Also I noticed that the time of year is when the low tide is between 4 pm and 5 pm. So this leave you with few days in the month of May, Fishing Season Starts April 27 and expect it to last until mid June, then

Walleye: Lac La Ronge, Northeast of Prince Albert Canada
Posted by trout-bumm on Thursday, April 19 @ 16:33:14 PDT
We're heading to Lac La Ronge Northeast of Prince Albert in a couple weeks. I always take my 9 weight to sight cast to cruising pike; however, when it comes to walleye, I usually pull out the spinning rod to jig. I would like to fly fish for them but can't seem to find anyone that has much success in that area. I've found the pike fishing to be phenominal on a fly rod and would like to leave the spinning gear behind and fly fish for walleye too. From a gear standpoint, I'd like information about how you rig your line/leader/tippet and what flies work best (size and type). I have found that when jigging for spring walleye, they typically school up and
