Canada Atlantic Salmon Gear: Rod Weights
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Tuesday, November 14 @ 17:58:04 PST
The rod weights I see used the most are 8 & 9 weight. I have heard that people use 7 weights but 7 is light and a 46" fish will burn you up, make a marathon runner of you and spool your reel. Between the 8 & 9 weights, the 9 is the most popular as the 9 is more able to take the shock of the take from a Salmon and gives you the rod strength to land the fish 26" or 46". When your looking at the fish, the smaller ones look like no problem for an 8 weight, as your flie passes over the pod of fish and the
40" plus fish moves to the flie you will feel a lot better about having the 9 weight in your hand.
