Atlantic Salmon Flies: The Fundamentals
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Wednesday, November 15 @ 09:02:36 PST
First what can't be used in the persuit of Atlantic Salmon. Weighted flies, nymphs, cone heads. emergers, any fly with added weight can not be used. This tactic is frowned on for obvious reasons. The flies you can use range in size from very small usually used in shallow water to much larger flies in high water. Some names will be Familliar, like Mickey Finn and others, " Hospitality " and " Orange Blossom " won't imediately conjur images in your mind of a pattern. Patterns that are succesful on one river may not be on a river 10 miles away.
One should call ahead or talk to someone who has fished the river your going to or lives in the area and get some idea on patterns and sizes for high and low water. Water levels change over night and you will want the size fly you need. Another good Idea is to have a good number of these flies before you leave the states because you will find that local flie shops are non existant or miles away in big towns and you want your time on the water not chasing flies.
