Atlantic Salmon Fly Fishing: Hook Set
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Thursday, November 16 @ 17:20:03 PST
As a Flyfisherman who has been lucky enough to fish quuite a bit around the US, Bahamas and Canada. I have noticed the difference in takes even in similar species. The Atlantic Salmons closest relative is the Brown Trout, the take is completely different than That of an Atlantic Salmon. With the Salmon the drag is very slight, the fish takes and turns, when he starts to move he feels the hook and takes off, at this point he sets the hook himself.
You will want your rod up and let him run. This helps to ensure the fish is fighting the rod not your arm and the angle will help keep the hook set and not pulled out by pressure or structure. The pulsating hook set and run is where the true thrill is.
