Quebec's North Shore: Brookies Like Mice
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Wednesday, November 22 @ 05:59:47 PST
While casting for Atlantic Salmon, A friend hooked a nice sea run Brookie. After landing this fish I noticed a tail and 2 legs protruding from the sea lice ridden fish. The Guide informed us that Sea Run Brookies often take mice. I always new of Pike and Brown trout taking mice but this was the first Brookie I'd ever seen with a mouse in his mouth. It was a large fish and could easily swallow the mouse. To this point I had been using purple flies, as the color purple seemed the best color to hook these wild fish.
Now I fnd that a mousee pattern mad to appear drowning and or scittered across the water is often taken by these averice fish

Quebec's North Shore: Brookies Like Mice by MANITOU on Wednesday, November 22 @ 09:49:16 PST http://www.nsfa-adventures.com | Yes its true Quebec Sea run brook trout do eat mice, especialy in August.
In the 2006 season I experienced 5 different occasion that mice were either visible in the mouth with the tail sticking out or it spit the mice out during the handling of the trout. I also witness on the TRINITY river a big trout grab a mice next to the shorline.
The best mice pattern are not the high floaters mice patterns but the mice pattern that the head and tail stays above water and the body is slightly submerged.
Mice pattern can be a great option whenb the fishing is slow, making the big brutes come up to the surface for a big quick meal.

Quebec's North Shore: Brookies Like Mice by coachman on Monday, December 04 @ 10:15:09 PST | | Mice are very effective in Labrador as well. Some of the larger fish caught were on a mouse scittered across the pool making all kinds of commotion. The guide called in "waking up" the pool. Absolutely vicious strikes when it does occur. I echo manitou's comments in that I've caught a large trout on a mouse and the fish had barely swallowed a real one. Opportunistic fish!!! |
