Fly Fishing Gaspe: Water Levels
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Tuesday, November 28 @ 16:18:17 PST
The Gaspe Peninsula is famous for it's gin clear water and sight fishing for Atlantic Salmon. The St. Jean and the York rivers are the clearest of the 3 closest to Gaspe Harbor. The Dartmouth also close is fairly clear but slightly tea stained but still lends itself to sight fishing. Water levels like water temperature are to key factors in moving fish. Water rising or at good levels will allow fish to move upstream to their spawning grounds. Conversley, low water holds fish back from their upstream journey and they can become stale waiting for rising water.
Rain and full Moon tides will push fish into the rivers and you can get some great fishing as they make a dash for their spawning ground. Extremely High water can be tough fishing and hard to see them go by unless they give you a jump or two. Low water that holds them trapped in pools can turn the bight off until fresh water and fresh fish start a run.
