Tips, Ties And Tactics Canada Atlantic Salmon: Black Fish
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Tuesday, November 28 @ 17:13:17 PST

After spawning, the exhausted Salmon, without good food become dark and emaciated in appearance. These fish are often called Black Salmon or Kelts. Once the Ice in the rivers breaks up they head down river to the ocean to gorge themselves on feed. Unlikei the Spring to Fall Spawning runs these fish going out eat anything they can. After all they have been through over the winter and the fact that catching one uses so much of the Salmons remaining energy, fishing for them is generally not allowed.

New Brunswick does allow fishing for Black Salmon. The Black Salmon are usually taken from boats do to the high water due to Spring run off. My understanding is that 10 to 20 fish days are not uncommon. Big Bucktails and large streamers are the usual fare for these hungry fish.

CAtching a black salmon is nothing like catching a fresh Atlantic and it doesnt have the same prestige.

Reason for this is the balck salmon is generally weaker and will gorge on anything in sight. The fish are not as strong and the colors and shape are often very skinny with a huge head.

But not to remove any of its traits its great fun to hook and remember to release them for the next spawn
