Fly Fishing For Atlantic Salmon: Where Are They
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Wednesday, November 29 @ 17:04:16 PST
When you walk down to a new pool, it's like walking into one of those movies that there is an endless number of sequels. You study the stage, made up of geological structure, that form the holding places in the pool. Usually the largest boulders form the deepest depressions, look here first for the larger fish. Smaller fish hold behind smaller rocks toward the down stream side of the pool. A lot of rivers have stone walls on one side of the pool and this is another favorite spot for fish as it gives them cover from predation.
A lot of times youll see what look like layered ledges going deep into the river and Salmon love these ledges for the above reasons. Runs, that sometimes faster and usualyy more shallow water that runs between pools will, on a bright day, hold fish under the cuts in the river bank, log and brush snags and limbs from overhaning trees. Sometimes studying the pool and runs to and out of the pool takes a little time but is definately worth it.
