Canada Fly Fishing: Reels For Atlantic Salmon
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Saturday, December 02 @ 08:28:36 PST
The question of reels and types of drag systems is an often asked question. There are many choices out there, some of them, according to the manufacturer are species specific, for Atlantic Salmon. This is true some reels are made with Atlantic Salmon specifically in mind but if you are just starting, are budget concious or just plain not into 3 - 7,000 dollars you'll be happy to know that there are big game reels from abot 250.00 to 700.00 that will due the job.
The drag system needs to be one that adjusts well in small increments and will not loose it's setting. People I have met over the years have had drag systems with additional features that are more personal choice than neccesity. The one common feature is a good disk drag made of cork. There are some new materials that are composite materials wich seem to serve as well. The reel should also be of size that will hold 200 - 250 yards of backing 20 - 30 lb.. Keep in mind that after heavy use and getting the reel wet you'll want to use a little Neatsfoot oil to lower abrasion of the cork. When purchasing a reel or picking a reel out of the ones you have, pick a reel that will hold the backing, good drag, you won't get spooled or won't free spool and end up with a huge ball of twisted line and the fish left with your fly.
