Tips, Ties And Tactics Blueback Trout: A Possibility In Canada?
Posted by jeremy on Sunday, December 03 @ 10:04:11 PST

Wow, in a recent chat statement Manitou and Greg were talking about Blueback Trout. I hear much talk about these here in Maine and mostly concerning fly fishermans desire to catch one of these. So, if a fly fisherman were looking to catch the seemingly elusive Blue Back Trout here in the USA, would his/her chances be better in Canada? If so, what time of

year would be best to target Blue Back Trout and what region of Canada are they most abundant? Also, I know it may have already been discussed but could someone define what exactly a "Blue Back Trout" is? Thanks.

Jeremy

I don't think the blueback you are refering is the same one up here in Quebec North Shore

The Juvenile brookie measure around 10 to 12 inches and are very silver with a dark olive blueish back with his sides varying from silver to metalic blue when the sun strikes it just right (we call them BLEU)

The Blueback in maine is not the same fish from what i have been told

Hope this clarifies it a little LOL

huh ... ok .. so the "blue back" that you refer to in canada is a "sea run brookie" jouvenile ... that has not made a run tothe sea yet? .... different from the blue back trout in maine that many fly fisherman hope to get .... i will have to ask around ... as i am curious to the difference between the "blue back trout" that you and greg speak of in canada .. and the "blue black trout in maine and possibly other waters ..

------------ thanks for the info

ps. still would like to catch brook trout from the various stages of which you speak in canada ..

- kelts or black sea run brookies
- july spawners 3-8 pounds
- the blue backs
- resident brookies

... i could not imagine catching an 8 pound brookie .. i would be in heaven.

Jeremy,

The blueback trout in Maine were introduced to a couple of ponds around the town of Allagash. I have caught several from a hike in pond. I believe the blueback trout in Maine is a Sunapee trout that is indigenous to NH. I read somewhere that these fish also will go to see when able.
