Gaspe Atlantic Salmon: Creel Surveys, Fish Ladders, Etc.
Posted by waterwhippa on Sunday, December 03 @ 17:24:14 PST
I was wondering if the Canadian government does any creel surveys on the Gaspe bay rivers like they do here in the United States. I am curious to see the most recent statistics on the number of grilse and mature salmon. Any help
would be great! Thanks.

And in the spring we have smolts whelle set up to count the baby salmon going to sea
The trinity is a witness river (temoin) for the north shore and the Saint Jean is the one for GAspe

Re: Gaspe Atlantic Salmon: Creel Surveys, Fish Ladders, Etc. by QuebecSporting on Friday, December 15 @ 16:30:18 PST http://www.QuebecSporting.com | Hello Waterwhippa,
Here on the Gaspe counts are very important.
Those rivers which are not catch and release only, are watched very closely. After the mid-season count (usually mid-July), if they judge the adult salmon are ar risk, river will go catch and release immediately.
Example: York River needs at least 550 adult salmon in the river by mid-July or else, Catch & release for the rest of the season.
At the end of the season , there is another count... however, this Fall was a little tricky, water levels were low and after the end of season count, more salmon enter the rivers. But it gives us a good idea of the population.
Our end of season counts were following:
approx runs:
York River:
1058 salmon
194 grilses
1252 Total
Dartmouth
513 salmon
366 grilses
835 total
St^Jean
756 salmon
246 grilses
1002 Total
Hope this help!!
