Canada: Ocean Run Steelhead
Posted by jason-c on Monday, December 04 @ 11:12:56 PST
I have heard that there are some steelhead opportunities in Eastern Canada. Are those sea run fish? What rivers do you find them in? What time of the year is best? Are the numbers big enough that it is worth while to target them? Thanks for the info-Jason

Re: Canada: Ocean Run Steelhead by PeteD on Monday, December 11 @ 08:37:18 PST | | The best time to fish for sea run rainbows in Nova Scotia is in the spring. I suppose they could be considered Steelhead in the sense that they spend the majority of their time in saltwater but they are certainly not as exciting to hook as those from the Great Lakes or West coast. A large majority of rivers in Nova Scotia are spate rivers so they may move out to sea out of necessity as much as anything else. I would imagine rainbows move into the rivers in the fall along with brown and speckled trout but have only ever hooked one in the spring. I would say a large sea run in Nova Scotia would be not much over 5 lbs with lots of dinks mixed in. I don't think it is a destination fishery but certainly can be a lot of fun if you find yourself there at the right time. I'd be happy to provide more specifics if anyone cares to give it a try. |
