Canadian Fly Fishing: Great Lakes Steelhead, Salmon And Trout Rivers?
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Tuesday, December 05 @ 19:30:18 PST
This is a question on rivers in Canada that feed into the Great Lakes and that have Runs of Steelhead, Salmon and Browns. I would like to hear from, and I'm sure others that frequent this site would to, fly fishermen from areas near the great lakes on the Canadian side or any fly fisherman that have fished Canadain Great Lakes rivers.
I know these species are available on the Northern side of The Great Lakes we share, let our readers hear from you.

Being from Ottawa makes it a little bit of a hike to the Toronto area to some of the Ontario tribs, but there are some smaller rivers/creeks along the 401 past Kingston that have been productive. Major challenge is that most fishable water shuts down after Dec 31, making it tough. The good news was the mild weather in Nov, Dec made the fishable tolerable (when compared to -30 degree temps now). I've fished a few lesser-known tribs on the Canadian side of Lake Erie and have had good success. The best thing about these tribs are lack of crowds...a big plus for me. I prefer the smaller (and therefore tougher to fish technically) creeks to the overcrowding.
Also managed to get out a few times for the fall salmon run at Bronte with good success.
I also plan on making a trip to the Salmon River in NY in the next month.
Glo-bugs/egg patterns in hot pink, black stones and micro-nymphs have been the go-to patterns this year. I'm looking to try skating some bombers this spring...anyone recommend a good pattern?
I'd be interested to hear from others in my neck of the woods that fish the tribs - also always looking for anyone to make a trip with.
