Quebec River: Fly Fishing Pike Tactics
Posted by MANITOU on Wednesday, December 13 @ 13:40:24 PST
River pike fly fishin is very different from still water pike fishing. River pike get allot stronger compared to typical lake dwellers. You will need a strong rod minimum 8 weight, 9 or 10 weight is preferable. A strong reel and reliable drag system is very important because these fish are accustomed to surviving in currents and small rapids that makes them full of muscle and quite difficult to tire them down after hooked. My set up is quite simple I use a Gatti FR 118 3PA which is a 11 foot 8 weight 3 piece progressive action rod matched with a STH TURBINE LA disc drag reel, the fly line that I prefer is an intermediate WF with 6 foot 10 lbs steel tyger leader. The flies are quite basic big streamers or big poppers
work fine, remembers when it comes to pike fishing the bigger the fly the bigger the fish.
Be very careful when trying to land a Pike because these fish will pretend they are tired and will explode at the last moment when you least expect them to do so.
I have seen more rods broken by pike than any other fish species combine.

Re: Quebec River: Fly Fishing Pike Tactics by jason-c on Wednesday, December 20 @ 07:17:53 PST http://www.fliesandfinswest.com | | Can you catch them with regularity. I know that out west, and the couple places I have fished them out east, that they are always around but need just the right circumstances to get them to take a fly. Is it the same up there? |
