Atlantic Salmon 101: A Fish I Have Always Admired
Posted by kray on Saturday, January 27 @ 04:33:00 PST
Hello everyone my name is Kray Lutz, I am 17 years old and am a fly fishing nut. I work at a local fly shop and fish as much as possible. My home water is the North Platte River, no atlantic salmon here! So I take a few fly fishing trips every year but have never caught an atlantic salmon. I have been to Alaska several times and caught all the species
time would allow. So where do you go for the best shot at a trophy atlantic salmon. I love to throw big flies for big fish and atlantic salmon have always been that fish that get me thinking. I have read so many stories about giant 50 pound atlantic salmon being landed and I dont know about you but that really gets me going. It seems like there is alot of heritage and history in atlantic salmon fishing and it has always been a fish I admire. So I would like to learn what I can so someday I can be part of that tradition.

Re: Atlantic Salmon 101: A Fish I Have Always Admired by jeremy on Saturday, January 27 @ 05:35:39 PST http://www.ineedasimplesolution.com | hey kray --- great post ... i can relate to it ... and i thought i would share a realization that i stumbled upon this past spring ....
i went to the american museum of fly fishing several months and when i walked through the doors i was instantly humbled by all of the legends of fly fishing and fly fishing equipment and authors and such that surrounded me on display and in books etc.....
instantly, i realized that i was just one of many many fly fisherman in a long line of tradition and heritage ... and when all of the "hottest" and "trendiest" things are stripped away from present day .... and we look at fly fishing from a historical timeline perspective ... it becomes clear that the "atlantic salmon" is called the "king of fish" for a reason ......... much of the flies and the development of early fly fishing techniques and equipment can be traced and tied to the atlantic salmon........ point being is this, .... even though you are from wyoming and an excellent fly fisherman and feel as though you don't know much about atlantic salmon and all that stuff (ps. i have never caught an atlantic salmon either) .. infact, you are more connected to the atlantic salmon than you think ... because if you trace back many streamer flies, feathers, lines and techniques and all that stuff ... the roots of it can be found in atlantic salmon .... i guess its kind of like looking at your family tree ... regardless of where you are today ... you could not ignore the fact that your great great great great great grandfather was an integral part of that .....
so --- in my opinion --- the atlantic salmon is a fish in a class of its own ... and for good reason ... its impact on the sport and development fly fishing is amazing and can not be ignored .... and for that reason, when i do someday catch my first atlantic salmon it will be a special day ... because i won't just be holding a beautiful chrome fish .... it will be different from any other fish .... i will be holding a legend ... and holding something that is representative of the birth, the heart and the very soul of fly fishing ..... and that is a truth that will forever be true ... because history can not be re-written .. and the atlantic salmon will always hold an almost God like place in the legacy of fly fishing ....
so -- i guess --- getting the opportunity to fish for these legends ... and if you are skilled and lucky enough to catch one --- you will have caught much much more than just another shiny big fish .....
sorry - for rambling ... i know this probably did not help much with any of the technical answers you were looking for ... but maybe it helped you to look at the atlantic salmon from a new, but very old perspective ....
take care kray .. good luck.
