Tips, Ties And Tactics Miramichi vs. Gaspe?: The Search For Bright Atlantic Salmon
Posted by keith on Saturday, January 27 @ 05:39:00 PST

Last spring I had an opportunity to fish the Miramichi for black salmon (kelts). It was a ton of fun and I certainly got my fill of fish. But it was not traditional Atlantic salmon fishing. Now that I have some salmon under my belt, I am looking at options to fish for some bright salmon. I have been considering two locations, back to the Miramichi or the amazing waters of the Gaspe. Both areas are about the same distance away form my home in Maine. I'm wondering if anyone has any compelling arguments that would help me decide. Chances of

success, cost, and the quality of the experience are factors I am considering. I think the catch rates may be higher on the Miramichi, but the gin clear waters and huge bright salmon of the Gaspe have me intrigued. Any thoughts on which area to try and/or what time of year is best for each system? I'm sure some of you lucky dogs out there have fished both areas! Thanks

Hi Keith
I have to tell you although I have fished several rivers in Canada from Cape Breton to the North Shore of quebec and some in between, I have not fished the Mimiramichi and don't know why I hav not, maybe this year. In Gaspe I have fished the gin clear waters of the York and have fished the Dartmouth as well as the St. John. I think the York is my favorite do to the Gin clear water making site fishing easy and a real rush when you can see the King of fish take your fly. The Miramichi is a great river and definately a famous Salmon river but I can't compare the actual experience. I do know that no matter where you hook a fresh chrome Salmon, you will never forget it. Keep watching and I'm sure someone with experience on that river will give you some advice.
