Atlantic Salmon: Weighted Streamers, Why Not Weighted Nymphs?
Posted by trousertrout on Monday, January 29 @ 14:38:15 PST
Why can atlantic salmon fly fisherman use weighted streamers but not bead head weighted nymphs? I've only fished for Atlantic salmon once in Nova Scotia, when i was in high school and there seemed to be this very strong tradition in the air which was cool, but it seemed they frowned upon new tactics. And from what I hear you can use weighted nymphs? What's this all about? I'd love to get into Atlantic Salmon fly fishing now
that they have opened up a season for them hear in maine.

Re: Atlantic Salmon: Weighted Streamers, Why Not Weighted Nymphs? by greg on Monday, January 29 @ 15:09:53 PST | | Weighted nymphs, either for ethical reasons or Salmon regulations, have never been used. Neither am I aware of the use of weighted streamers. In high water situations sinking tips are used to get down in the water column to be present the fly properly to the fish. This is the only way I know of that you can use nymphs. Some streamers will run deeper because they have large hooks or heavy double hooks, other than this there are no weights allowed that I am aware of. This primarily is for the preservation of species. |

If the main purpose for having a no weighted fly law is for preservation purpose... Then why couldn't folks fish weighted flies under a C&R Reg...As it stands anglers can harvest fish? Correct? It comes down to tradition, I'd guess... |

The attraction of fly fishing is not how many and how fast you can catch fish, it is the cast, the water, the hook up and the people or lack of people that make the sport what it is. Your personal style that culminates in the catching of the fish your after. It's the classic pursuit with an ancient method that attracts us. |
