Fly Fishing Canada: Early Season Atlantics
Posted by patm on Thursday, February 01 @ 04:16:24 PST
The purist will say the hold over, or black salmon are not the same as the fresh silver fish. This may be so, but they sure are there in numbers and anxious to take your fly offering. I have fished the Restigouche River and the Maramchi for black salmon. I have fished as early as April and as late as Memorial Day weekend. These fish have spent the long winter in the river and as they head to sea they are ravenous. Streamer patterns on a swing drift can result in 10 hook ups a day. The fish will leap from the run and give your gear a true work out. . You will need to hire a guide with a boat as wading is impossible during the spring. The trips I have taken have been much more affordable then the traditional salmon season. If you want to have a real shot at catching atlantic salmon, and you can get by the "oh thats a black" then don't disregard the early spring season.
The long and the short of it is hungry Salmon on their return to the sea eat your streamers in far greater numbers than fish coming in.

My motive was to hook an atlantic, and the kelts were more than cooperative. As you said they were full of fight and i even hook one salmon that took to the air eight times! Good fun for sure.
