Tips, Ties And Tactics Nova Scotia Atlantic Salmon: Wear Your Woolies

We are very fortunate to live in Nova Scotia where you can fish from April 1 to October 31 with good chances to catch atlantic salmon throughout most of that time without too far of a drive from my house. My keen freind and I were at the pool before 5:30 to beat the Rivals to the hotspot in the dark last sunday opening day of "trout" season. Stumbling accross the river in pitch dark no flashlight, minus 5 celcius we beat them this year. We were almost done our coffee when we heard them on the rocks across the river , they were disapointed but moved on. Too cold to sit still we started fishing as soon as we could tie on a fly with no light, I went through the pool first and hooked a slinky grilse .I have had my guides freeze up before but never my reel and had to submerge it in the water to get it to work. Anyway, when I finaly

got the fish to my hand , it was hooked in the top of the head and I was worrried that it might not survive but I had to let it go. Down river later I hooked another bigger fish but lost it with the same problems with my reel, frozen solid! Anyway after about 3 hours of freezing hands and gear we walked back up to the top pool as we forgot our coffee mugs. Dave wanted to try the pool again as he hooked seven fish there the last time he was first there on openening day and he couldn't beleive we only got the one fish. While I was checking the temp of the water (2Celius) he hooked a fish and to our surprise when he got it in it had a hole on the top of its head and was the same fish I landed a few hours earlier.
There are alot of people who are down on Black salmon fishing thinking that they are too weak and vulnerable this time of year. I think this proves that they are pretty tough and some recent studies on Kelts in NS have supported that. I think that it is one of the funnest things that you can do in your long underwear after a long cold winter, it beats sitting by the fire in january thinking about fishing. It is not as exillarating as having a salmon raise 5 or 6 times to a bomber in July but its close!

Thanks for the story, it was chilling. A lot of people don't realize you can fish for slinks in Spring and you might hook a fres fish coming in. Could you give us some tips on kinds of flies for these darker retuning fish.

I agree that catching skinks can be a lot of fun. Particularly if your luck in the fall (and spring and fall) has been something less than extraordinary. I think I know the waters you speak of and can't think of anywhere else in the world I would rather be in my long underwear. Looking forward to hearing and seeing more from you this fall. And maybe even this summer depending on how the bidding goes.
