Canada: Are The Salmon Running?
Posted by fliesandfinsnorth on Saturday, July 14 @ 04:23:32 PDT
This question is to those fishing for Atlantic Salmon in Newfoundland, Labrador and Atlantic Canada. When I left Canada the strawberry run was late in the above mentioned parts of Canada and the theory was that the water along the coast was to cold yet for the fish to run. We would like to hear if the run started yet, their numbers and some and some stories and info on this late run. Stories and pictures would be
great and tips or questions on the North page.

Re: Canada: Are The Salmon Running? by PeteD on Monday, July 16 @ 07:39:53 PDT | | Unfortunately I can't speak from personal experience but I can say the fishing is in full swing in Labrador. gofish-ns just got back from the Pinware where they had an epic trip. He gave me a call mid trip to rub it in... Interestingly he was told the run started late because of ice off the coast of Greenland. Apparently the salmon won't travel under the ice so they hang out until it breaks up. Said they passed several icebergs on the ferry from Newfounland to Labrador. I guess they timed it right... So I'm assuming salmon fishing in other provinces will improve as more fish make their way home. Just have to hope they arrive to find plenty of water in the rivers. |

Re: Canada: Are The Salmon Running? by JUE on Monday, July 23 @ 10:25:46 PDT | The salmon are definitely behind. I fish all of the rivers on the west coast of NL, and though there are fish in the rivers, they are nowhere near the numbers that should be returning. You are right about the science, that the ice has hindered their migration. However, rivers here on the west coast have been very low for the past few weeks, and there is speculation that the main runs of salmon are waiting in the bay.
The good news is, we had A LOT of rain last week, and all the rivers on the west coast were literally in the woods all weekend. They were unfishable, if that's a word. So, once they drop, everyone is assuming the rivers to produce some great fishing.
We keep journals on most of the west coast rivers on our website, feel free to drop by for some chatter. Since this site does not allow links, you can message me if you are interested. I'm not here to advertise, just to share info.
I'll drop back here and update you all as well. I'm heading to Harry's River tomorrow morning, hopefully some tight lines!!

Re: Canada: Are The Salmon Running? by JUE on Tuesday, July 24 @ 05:50:32 PDT | The fish are in!
I was at one of my favorite pools on Harry's river this morning, and the water is still a little high. Due to the water levels, it was plain to see that the fish were just moving through, not stopping to look at a fly at all. The counter at the head of the river should yield some large results this week!
Reports of a lot of fish being seen at Flat Bay too, but they too are not taking.
Oh well, the fish are moving freely, they'll settle as the water levels drop, and for those who get on through, spawn freely!!! |
